KykNET Fiesta Award-Nominated Dimpho and the Catfish Comes to the Performing Arts Centre of the Free State
Acclaimed theatre-maker Jane Mpholo brings her enchanting production Dimpho and the Catfish to the Performing Arts Centre of the Free State (PACOFS) for a limited season from 25 to 29 August 2026. The show is designed for audiences aged 6 and up. It is interactive, filled with humor, and packed with meaningful moments. The production offers a safe and welcoming space for open dialogue between generations.
This family-friendly show is a vibrant blend of performance, music and storytelling that speaks directly to the challenges of growing up in a digital world. At the heart of the story is Dimpho, a young girl thrilled to receive her first smartphone from her mother, Madimpho. What begins as a moment of joy quickly unravels when Dimpho connects with a stranger online. The story unfolds into a powerful tale of courage, trust, and the unbreakable bond between mother and daughter. Playful yet deeply engaging, the production explores themes of technology, safety and love in a way that resonates with both children and adults.
The production has received national recognition, earning a KykNET Fiësta Award nomination for Best Achievement in Children’s and Youth Theatre, affirming its artistic excellence and impact within South Africa’s theatre landscape. Created by Jane Mpholo, the production reflects her ongoing commitment to developing high-quality theatre for young audiences that is both entertaining and educational. Her work consistently creates meaningful cultural experiences while inspiring children to see themselves reflected in stories rooted in African contexts.
“There are so many cases in South Africa where young people are bullied, go missing or are harmed after meeting strangers online. We keep warning each other about the dangers of social media, but we often forget to include children in those conversations” Mpholo explains.
